If you have a home phone with an RJ11 jack that doesn’t support VoIP or a cable modem, you won’t be able to use the network from your wireless router to make calls. Instead, you would need to connect the landline phone to the router by using its built-in analog ports. In this case, you need to configure your wireless router as a DHCP server and assign it an IP address in the same subnet as your existing home network so that both of these devices can communicate with each other. Read on to find out more about connecting a landline phone to a wireless router by using its ports and configuring it as a DHCP server.
How To Connect A Landline Phone To The Wireless Router
- Connect the landline phone to the router by using the RJ11 port.
- Configure your wireless router as a DHCP server and assign it an IP address in the same subnet as your existing home network so that both of these devices can communicate with each other.
- Connect a VoIP adapter to the RJ11 port on your landline phone and configure it to work with VoIP service using its integrated software.

Configure The Wireless Router As A DHCP Server
- Power on the wireless router.
- Connect a computer to the wireless router with an Ethernet cable and configure it to work with the same network as your wireless router.
- Open a web browser and go to the address bar and type 192.168.1.1 into it, followed by pressing Enter key to open the default page of your wireless router’s control panel.
- Navigate to Network > IP Configuration page, then click on the “IPv4” tab and select the “Enabled” radio button to enable the DHCP server function on this device and assign it an IP address in the same subnet as your existing home network so that both of these devices can communicate with each other.
- Open a web browser and type the default IP address of your wireless router. For example, http://192.168.1.1 in your PC or http://192.168.2.1 in your tablet or smartphone browser to access the configuration page of the router from your computer or mobile device respectively.
- Click/tap on “Wireless Router” in the left pane to access its settings page if you are using a computer, click/tap on Basic Settings in the right pane if you are using a mobile device, and then click/tap on the “DHCP Server” tab if you are using a laptop or desktop computer to configure it as a DHCP server for your network devices so that they can obtain an IP address automatically from this router before connecting to it by using its built-in Ethernet ports so that all devices will be able to communicate with each other without any issues like connection drops, slow speed, etc., without having to manually enter an IP address in each device’s settings menu every time they want to connect it to this wireless router by using its built-in Ethernet ports so that all devices will be able to communicate with each other without any issues like.
- log in to the router interface using the default username and password that you set up when you installed it (for example, user name: admin and password: admin). You can also use an alternative username and password if you like (for example, user name: guest and password: guest).
- In the Wireless Settings window that opens on your computer screen, click on Wireless Security in the left-hand pane to open a list of available security settings for your wireless router (Figure 1). Click on WPA2/802.11i to enable this security setting for your wireless router (Figure 2).
- Select Enable from the Security menu in the Wireless Settings window that opens on your computer screen (Figure 3). Click Apply to save these changes or OK if you are happy with them or Cancel if you don’t want to make these changes at this time or Apply Anyway if you decide not to make these changes at this time but want to keep them as they are.
Assign An IP Address To The Landline Phone
- Open a Web browser and type the IP address of the wireless router. An example is 192.168.1.1 for a wireless router with an IP address of 192.168.1.2, so you would type 192.168.1.1 in your browser’s address bar to access its configuration page as shown below:
- Click on the “Start” tab and then click on “Run” to open a command prompt window (as shown below):
- Type “ipconfig /all” in the command prompt window and press Enter to view your wireless router’s IP settings as shown below:
- In this case, your wireless router has an IP address of 192.168.1.2, its default gateway is 192.168 .1 .254, its DNS server is 208 .67 .222 .222, and its subnet mask is 255 .255 .0 .0 as shown.
- Open a web browser on the computer and type the IP address of the wireless router into the address bar.
- Enter the default username and password that is provided by your ISP.
- Click on “Apply” to save the changes and restart your computer to apply them.
Conclusion
Connecting a landline phone to a wireless router can be done in two ways: By connecting the phone to the router’s analog ports and by using the router’s built-in SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) server. While the first option is simple, it is possible that it won’t work if your phone is too old. This is because not all wireless routers have built-in SIP servers which are necessary to route VoIP calls. In this case, you can connect a VoIP phone to the router’s SIP server. Connecting a landline phone to a wireless router is also a good way to boost your home network’s security.
